CS orders heritage revamp of walled city
Jaipur, April 1 -- Chief secretary V Nivas on Tuesday led an extensive ground inspection of the historic "Parkota" (walled city), directing officials to ramp up conservation, beautification, and efforts to retain its UNESCO World Heritage status amid urban pressures.
The chief secretary undertook a detailed on-foot survey of several heritage structures, temples, and traditional streets.
Highlighting Jaipur's historical significance, the chief secretary said the city's architectural beauty and heritage identity require sustained and coordinated efforts. He stressed that maintaining the UNESCO World Heritage tag demands continuous conservation, improved infrastructure, and strict adherence to heritage norms.
Following the field visit, Nivas chaired a review meeting at the municipal corporation headquarters with zonal deputy commissioners and officials. A presentation by the Heritage Cell outlined ongoing and completed works related to conservation, restoration, and beautification initiatives in the walled city.
During the meeting, Rajasthan chief secretary V Nivas issued a series of directives to strengthen heritage management in the Jaipur Walled City. He called for the immediate removal of unauthorised overhead cables and the repair of defunct streetlights and facade lighting.
He also stressed strict implementation of the Special Area Heritage Plan Component (SAHP), encompassing conservation of tangible and intangible heritage, infrastructure improvement, mobility, tourism development, disaster management, environmental planning, and a robust legal framework. Additionally, he directed officials to activate and strengthen the Heritage Cell to ensure more proactive and effective execution of conservation initiatives.
The directives come amid growing concerns over urban pressures, infrastructure stress, and visual pollution within the historic core of Jaipur.
