Jaipur, Feb. 17 -- An altercation erupted during Mahashivratri celebrations at the historic Tadkeshwar Mahadev Temple in Jaipur's walled city between the temple's priests and police late on Sunday. Senior police officers termed the dispute a result of "misunderstanding" between the temple management and police and assured a fair probe and appropriate action after investigation. According to the temple's volunteers, around 11 pm, a sub-inspector from Manak Chowk police station allegedly entered the temple's sanctum sanctorum wearing a belt-in violation of temple norms-under the pretext of security. Temple priest Vikrant Vyas said the administration had been informed in writing about the four-phase Mahashivratri prayers. When asked to remove his belt before darshan during the second phase of rituals, the sub-inspector allegedly argued and misbehaved with priests and devotees. A video of the incident later surfaced on social media. In protest, priests and devotees shut the temple's main gate briefly on Monday, raising slogans against the administration and terming the episode an affront to religious sentiments. The main entrance remains closed, with entry allowed through a smaller gate. Priests are staging a sit-in outside and have given the administration four hours to suspend the accused sub-inspector, warning of a complete shutdown if no action is taken. A delegation met senior police officials, including assistant superintendent of police (north) Neeraj Pathak and Manak Chowk station house officer Rakesh Khyalia, within the temple premises.
