Cong to move court over voter list tampering: LoP
Jaipur, Jan. 17 -- The Congress party has announced that it will move the court by filing a petition over alleged attempts to tamper with voter lists in Rajasthan, with the party vowing to fix legal accountability on officials accused of undermining the democratic process.
Leader of Opposition Tikaram Jully said strict action would be sought through judicial intervention against those found involved in what he described as a conspiracy to manipulate electoral rolls.
In a post on X on Friday, Jully accused the BJP of attempting to delete the names of Congress supporters from voter lists during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. He claimed that the alleged attempt failed due to the vigilance of Congress workers across the state.
Jully further alleged that after the BJP's efforts did not succeed, the Election Commission extended the objection period of the SIR process in Rajasthan without any apparent necessity. He termed the move "suspicious" and alleged that it would provide the ruling party another opportunity to carry out similar attempts at voter list manipulation.
Appealing to party workers, Jully urged Congress cadres to remain fully alert and ensure that no malpractice takes place until the SIR process is completed. He said complaints had been received from several districts, prompting the party to prepare for legal action. "We will approach the court and ensure that officers involved in attempts to weaken democracy are held accountable under the law," Jully said.
Jully's remarks came amid similar allegations levelled by former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot, who also launched a sharp attack on the BJP-led state government over the issue.
Gehlot described the alleged voter list manipulation as a "dark chapter for democracy in Rajasthan" and accused the government of misusing the administrative machinery to influence the electoral process.
Gehlot alleged that on the final day of the SIR process, Booth Level Officers (BLOs) were pressured through Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) to delete the names of voters perceived to be aligned with the Congress. He further claimed that in some cases, Form-7, used for deletion of names from voter lists, was allegedly pre-filled and handed over to BLOs, which he said was a direct attack on the fairness and impartiality of elections.
The former chief minister also alleged that officials who refused to participate in the exercise were threatened with transfers by people associated with the ruling party. He said similar attempts were made even in his own constituency of Sardarpura.
Gehlot said he had spoken to State Election Commissioner Naveen Mahajan to apprise him of the situation and demanded immediate corrective action. Issuing a warning to officials, Gehlot said that while governments may come and go, those violating constitutional norms would face legal consequences. He urged officers to uphold constitutional propriety, cautioning that strict action would follow any breach of rules.
Hitting back at the Congress leaders' statements, cabinet minister Sumit Godara accused the Congress of misleading the public and casting aspersions on constitutional institutions.
Godara said the former chief minister nowadays only issues statements and raises questions on matters like SIR to divert attention. He claimed it has been the Congress' long-standing practice to create confusion on such issues. Godara pointed out that since Independence, SIR has been conducted eleven times across the country, ten of them during Congress regimes, and questioned who was responsible if Congress leaders had objections even then.
Rejecting allegations of pressure on officials, Godara said the SIR process is carried out by the Election Commission of India, an independent constitutional body, and questioned how officers could be influenced in such a framework. He further alleged that Ashok Gehlot himself had influenced officials in the past, claiming that such accusations were made by Gehlot's own OSD and that even call records of MLAs were accessed during his tenure.
He added that misleading people has become the Congress' political approach, which, he claimed, is the reason the party has been rejected by voters across the country....
