BJP's 2 vs 5 years debate 'irrational', says Gehlot
Jaipur, Feb. 24 -- Former chief minister Ashok Gehlot on Monday launched a sharp attack on the BJP-led state government over the "2 years versus 5 years" debate, terming it "absurd" and unprecedented in India's democratic history.
Addressing reporters outside state assembly, Gehlot said that since Independence, no government - either at the Centre or in any state - had ever engaged in such a comparison within the Assembly. "Since Independence, no government has made such a foolish statement. It was an extremely illogical remark, and that is why the government had to withdraw it," he said.
Gehlot said the government had initially agreed to such a discussion but later shifted its stance to debating only its performance report. He called the move "irrational" and demanded an open discussion on the BJP government's two-year performance. He also urged the CM to seek direct public feedback on the government's work, claiming that "the situation of the government is very poor."
The former CM alleged that several development works being showcased by the current government were actually approved and initiated during his tenure. He said financial sanctions had been granted, tenders issued, and groundwork begun under his administration.
"We made the announcements, issued financial approvals, floated tenders and started the work. Officials compiled those figures and handed them over to the present government," he said, alleging that credit was now being claimed for projects launched earlier.
Gehlot further alleged that some schemes started by his government had been discontinued, while others that were completed were not being operationalised. "Many works remain unfinished. If completed, they would benefit the public and especially the youth," he said, citing initiatives such as the development of a coaching hub.
Gehlot also criticised the state government for not allowing discussion on the home department's grant demands in the Assembly, calling it a serious matter. "It is extremely concerning that the government is not permitting discussion on the Home Department's grants, despite the Opposition demanding it," he said.
Highlighting law and order concerns, Gehlot claimed that more than 13,000 rape cases had been reported in Rajasthan during the BJP's two-year rule. "Women are not safe even in their homes. There have been shocking incidents of brutality. Such issues require open debate in the House," he said.
"Law and order is a serious subject. There should be detailed discussion so that suggestions from both sides can help ensure better administration and good governance," he said.
The remarks come amid heightened political confrontation in Rajasthan over the scope of debate on the BJP government's two-year performance and broader governance issues.
Commenting on it, minister of state for home Jawahar Singh Bedham said that for the first time in the Assembly, the CM had stated that "what the Congress could not accomplish in five years, we have achieved in two," claiming the remark had "shaken the Congress."
Bedham alleged that Congress leaders were reprimanded by their party high command in Delhi and questioned over their silence in the House. "They were asked why they did not speak in the Assembly, what they were doing there, and why they created disruption instead of responding," he said....
