India, Feb. 21 -- I n a major relief, the Supreme Court, on Thursday, has granted regular bail to filmmaker Vikram Bhatt and his wife Shwetambari Bhatt in a multi-crore cheating case linked to a proposed biopic project. Notably, the apex court had granted interim relief to Shwetambari Bhatt last week. The couple had spent several weeks in custody after being arrested by the Rajasthan Police in December and lodged in Jodhpur Central Jail. According to Live Law, the case was filed by Ajay Murdia, founder of Indira IVF in Udaipur, who alleged he was induced to invest over Rs.30 crore in a biopic on his late wife Indira with the promise of high returns that never materialised. A bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, along with Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul Pancholi, set aside the Rajasthan High Court order that had earlier denied bail. While granting relief, the apex court observed that the dispute appeared "primarily commercial in nature" and suggested mediation. "It seems to us that the dispute essentially pertains to a commercial transaction. it may be appropriate for the parties to resolve the disputes through mediation," the bench noted. The court added that bail was granted with the expectation that the appellants would attempt an amicable resolution. Both parties have been directed to appear before the Supreme Court Mediation Centre. During the hearing, Senior Advocate Siddharth Dave appeared for the Bhatts, while Senior Advocate Vikas Singh represented the complainant. Singh told the court there was another FIR against Vikram Bhatt in Mumbai in a separate cheating case. HTC...
