Jaipur, Feb. 18 -- The state legislative assembly was adjourned five times on Tuesday amid massive uproar and heated exchanges between legislators of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Opposition Congress over cow slaughter and granting the cow the status of "Rajya Mata" (State Mother). The controversy erupted during Question Hour when BJP MLA Balmukundacharya asked what steps were being taken to accord the cow the status of "Rajya Mata." Responding for the government, animal husbandry minister Joraram Kumawat spoke about religious beliefs associated with cows. Unsatisfied, Balmukundacharya objected, saying his query was not about religious sentiments but specifically about granting the cow "Rajya Mata" status. Speaker Vasudev Devnani directed the minister to reply clearly. Kumawat then said no such proposal was currently under consideration. The BJP MLA countered that states like Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh had already granted such recognition and asked why Rajasthan could not follow suit. The minister replied that if such provisions existed elsewhere, the government would examine the records to explore possible implementation. The situation escalated when Leader of Opposition Tika Ram Jully intervened, calling it serious that even a BJP MLA was dissatisfied with his own government's response. Jully alleged cow slaughter incidents were rising in the state and cited a recent case at Jaipur's Hingonia Gaushala, where a cow's severed head was allegedly hung. He claimed BJP workers were involved and accused BJP MLAs of shielding them. At this point, BJP MLA from Civil Lines Gopal Sharma rose angrily and moved towards the Well of the House without permission. Despite repeated objections from Speaker Devnani, Sharma continued speaking loudly. The Speaker asked Chief Whip Jogeshwar Garg to restrain him, but the commotion intensified. As Congress MLAs prepared to raise placards, the Speaker termed it a pre-planned attempt to disrupt proceedings. Amid sloganeering and chaos, the House was first adjourned till 12 noon. When the Assembly reconvened, disruptions continued. During Zero Hour, Congress legislators entered the Well shouting slogans, prompting Chairperson Sandeep Sharma to adjourn proceedings again for 30 minutes. The House was adjourned a third and fourth time as the uproar persisted. Ultimately, the Assembly was adjourned for a fifth time till 5 pm. In an effort to break the deadlock, MLAs from both sides later met Speaker Devnani in his chamber. Congress legislators objected to BJP MLA Gopal Sharma's conduct, alleging he approached opposition benches aggressively. At a press conference later, Tika Ram Jully termed the developments "condemnable." He accused the state government of laxity in cow slaughter cases and alleged BJP legislators were aiding the accused. Jully said that while the BJP had earlier promised to grant the cow State Mother status, the minister appeared evasive in the Assembly. He further alleged the BJP was using "Gau Mata" as a political tool to garner votes during elections while failing to fulfil its promises. Jully also raised concerns over alleged encroachments on gaushala land, claiming 1,100 bighas were registered in a single day, hinting at land mafia involvement. Jully announced the Congress would submit a written complaint to the Speaker regarding the conduct of certain BJP MLAs and sought a review of video footage. He said normal functioning of the House would resume only after action is taken against members found guilty of inappropriate behaviour....
