7 from Raj killed as truck hits car in Gujarat
Barmer, Jan. 26 -- Seven people from Rajasthan were killed and three others were seriously injured in a road accident as a truck rammed head-on into an Innova car in Gujarat's Banaskantha district on Saturday, police said on Sunday.
According to police, the accident occurred on the Palanpur-Abu highway near Iqbalgadh in Amirgadh taluka when a speeding truck bearing Gujarat registration came driving on the wrong side and rammed head-on into an Innova car with Rajasthan registration. The collision was so severe that the Innova was reduced to a mangled wreck with debris strewn across the highway, while the truck overturned after the impact, police said.
All seven passengers travelling in the Innova succumbed to their injuries at the accident site. Local residents worked alongside the police to pull out those trapped inside the crushed vehicle. The bodies were later moved to a nearby government hospital for post-mortem examination, and the three critically injured people were immediately shifted to a hospital in Palanpur through ambulance, police said.
The crash led to a massive traffic jam that stretched for around five kilometres on the busy highway. Police reached the spot to clear the scene, manage traffic, and begin their investigation.
Six of the deceased have been identified as Prakash Kalawant (36), who lived in Falna in Pali district; Mohammad Hussain and his wife Jinnat; Mohammad Sharif, all residents of Chhavni village in Shivganj, Sirohi district; and Deepak Singh from Abu Road in Sirohi district. Another victim belonged to Pindwara in Sirohi district, while efforts continue to establish the identity of the seventh person.
Most of those who lost their lives were from the Pali and Sirohi areas of Rajasthan.
Police have registered a case against the truck driver, and the initial probe has revealed that negligence and driving on the wrong side of the road were the main reasons behind the fatal crash. Further investigation into the matter is underway....
