52-year-old injured in leopard attack: Officials
Bharatpur, March 20 -- A 52-year-old woman was seriously injured after a leopard attacked her while she was working in her field in Bharatpur district on Thursday morning, officials said.
The incident occurred around 8 am in the Rupwas police station area when Chandrabati Devi, a resident of Tejnagar village, had gone to harvest wheat along with her family members. According to her son Virendra, several farmers were working nearby when the animal, believed to be hiding in the standing crop and bushes, suddenly emerged and attacked her without warning.
Recounting the incident, Chandrabati said the animal pounced on her and clamped its jaws around her neck, attempting to drag her away. "The attack was so sudden that I fell to the ground. It climbed onto me and tried to maul my face with its claws. I struggled to breathe and everything went dark for a moment. I kept fighting back while it kept biting and scratching me," she said.
Her son Shrikant raised an alarm, prompting nearby farmers to rush to the spot. The commotion forced the animal to flee. "If it had stayed a few seconds longer, I might not have survived," she added.
The injured woman was immediately taken to the Rupwas sub-district hospital, where she is undergoing treatment for injuries to her neck and hand.
Forest department officials reached the spot after being alerted. Forester Sushpendra Singh said a team conducted a search operation using drones, but no movement of the animal was detected. He added that it is yet to be conclusively established whether the attack was carried out by a leopard or another wild animal....
