4 held in Banswara murder case that sparked tensions
Jaipur, May 1 -- Four people were arrested on Thursday for allegedly hacking a 36-year-old man to death over a long-time rivalry in Banswara that also sparked a major clash between two tribal communities, police said.
"At least 12 people of a family belonging to the Katara community were named in the FIR, all of whom fled the village after the murder on Sunday. On Thursday, we traced four of them from a nearby village and arrested them," said DSP Roop Singh.
The arrested accused have been identified as Nana Lal Katara (45), his son Rameshwar (21), and his cousins Anil and Ganesh. "Both the accused and the victim are the residents of Tamatia village under Mota Gaon police station in Banswara. The victim, Govind Chhagan, belonged to Mahida tribal community while the accused are from Katara community. Chhagan's sister had a relationship with a man from the accused's family but Chhagan and his family did not approve of it. They also married her off to another man a year ago. Since this incident, a rivalry started between the two families. At least three more cases of brawling and property damage have been lodged against both the families in the last one year," Singh said.
According to police, Chhagan and some members of the Katara family went to appear before the court in connection to one of those old cases lodged against the accused's family.
"While returning home in the evening, the accused found Chhagan near his home in Taamatia. They immediately attacked him with an axe, repeatedly striking his neck until he died. Later they fled the spot and are still absconding. Few minutes later, the local villagers informed the police about the gruesome murder at around 6.45 pm" said Kumar.
Police immediately reached the spot, called an FSL team, sent the body to mortuary, and launched probe.
However, tension escalated when people from the victim's family and local villagers of Mahida community started gathering in large numbers and launched an attack on the villagers belonging to Katara community. "At around 10 pm, at least 400 to 500 people of Mahida community gathered in the village. When the police managed to reach the spot, the angry mob set about 23 houses on fire along with some two-wheelers. Both the groups also started pelting stones at each other," said SHO Ramesh Chandra Patidar....
