2nd woman dies after C-section at hospital
Jaipur, May 8 -- A 20-year-old woman undergoing treatment at Kota Medical College and Hospital died on Thursday, a day after another woman died following cesarean (C-section) deliveries at the hospital, officials said. Four other women who underwent similar surgeries remain critical.
Kota collector Peeyush Samaria said the latest victim, Jyoti Ravi, was among six women who underwent cesarean surgeries on Tuesday and fell sick hours later.
"The latest woman was among the six women who underwent the surgery on Tuesday and fell sick hours later. They were all shifted to super speciality block (SSB) on Wednesday morning during which Payal died. Today her condition further deteriorated and so the doctors put her under the ventilator. But she passed away at around 10.30 am," Samaria said.
He added that the condition of the four other women remained critical and authorities were considering shifting them to Jaipur for advanced treatment.
Meanwhile, expert teams from Kota district hospital and Sawai Man Singh Hospital reached the hospital to investigate the incident.
"Both the teams are examining the conditions of the women and scrutinising other technical aspects to trace the reasons behind their death. They are checking whether they were given any wrong medicine or treatment," Samaria said.
Kota Medical College principal Prasun Jain said all six women had been admitted to the maternity ward on May 4 and underwent surgeries on Monday evening.
"However, on Tuesday, their conditions deteriorated drastically and they have been shifted to super speciality block (SSB). We suspect that all of them developed some infection in their kidneys after the surgery. Prima facie, their blood pressure dropped while many of them also had breathing issues. Initial tests suggested some infection in their kidneys. But it is yet not clear how it happened to all of them," Jain said.
The four women still admitted in the SSB were between the ages of 29 and 35, officials said.
Dhanni's brother, Kushal, alleged negligence by the hospital staff.
"We admitted my sister to the hospital on May 4. On the same day, a cesarean surgery was performed on her and she delivered the baby. However, she started falling sick at least eight hours later when her blood pressure dropped," he said.
"All the six women fell sick at the same time. All of their symptoms were also similar. It is clearly due to some negligence by the doctors or the nurses. My sister was absolutely fine and healthy before the surgery. Doctors also reported the same. How could she fall sick if she had to be transferred to the SSB?" he added.
A group of Congress workers staged a protest outside the SSB demanding action against those responsible. "This is sheer negligence. All of them are new mothers. They delivered babies just two days back. Their babies are healthy. How could all of them fall sick suddenly? The authorities are trying to sit on the matter. They could not even identify the reason of their death. We demand the police to investigate the matter and immediately take action against the culprits," a protester said.
Former chief minister Ashok Gehlot also criticised the alleged negligence at the hospital, calling the incident "unforgivable".
In a post on X, Gehlot alleged that several pregnant women remained in distress throughout the night without medical attention. He said the silence at the chief minister's level despite such a major "system failure" reflected insensitivity and demanded immediate action against those responsible....
