Jaipur, Feb. 25 -- A 26-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday for raping and murdering a 13-year-old girl in Bikaner, police said. Bikaner IG Lata Manoj said, "The accused, Shyam Sundar, is a local farmer who abducted the minor on Saturday when she was going to school, raped her, and then murdered when she fell unconscious. We arrested him on Tuesday after conducting primary investigation." The incident occurred at around 11.30am on Saturday, when the victim, a Class VIII student, was heading to school for an exam, police said. At around 12.30pm, school authorities called her parents to say she had not arrived. "Her parents and some locals immediately started searching for her and recovered her body from a forest area close to a highway. This is only about a kilometre away from the school," said Bikaner SP Kavendra Singh Sagar. The body was found half-naked, with injury marks, prompting locals to stage a dharna on the highway, claiming the minor had been raped. The body was sent for autopsy, and police lodged an FIR under section 103 (murder) of the BNS and relevant sections of the Pocso Act. "We started checking the nearby CCTV footages of Saturday in which we spotted Sundar, whose movement seemed suspicious at the same area where the victim's body was found. We immediately detained him and started questioning," said the SP. During questioning, the accused confessed to abducting the girl from a road and taking her to the jungle. "He raped the minor for an hour following which she fainted. The accused got scared and smothered her to death. Then, he came out of the jungle and fled," said the SP. Police have added the BNS section on rape to the FIR following the confession, while the autopsy report is awaited....
