Meerut, Feb. 2 -- Two pilgrims were killed and a woman critically injured after a speeding Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) bus hit them on the Delhi-Dehradun National Highway-58 in Meerut on Sunday morning, police said. The accident occurred around 10am when the victims were walking along the highway on their way to Nangli Tirath. The impact was so severe that two of the pilgrims died on the spot, while the third sustained serious injuries. The deceased have been identified as Hariom Singh, a fertiliser trader, and Sarla. Hariom, a resident of Shivpuri locality under Khatauli police station limits in Muzaffarnagar district, was travelling with his wife Sarita and their neighbour Sarla. All three devotees had set out on foot for the pilgrimage when a roadways bus coming from the Muzaffarnagar side hit them at high speed. Following the collision, the bus driver fled the spot along with the vehicle, triggering panic and anger among locals. People present at the scene immediately informed the police and arranged for the injured woman to be taken to a private hospital, where her condition is reported to be critical. On receiving the information, police reached the spot, took the bodies into custody, and sent them for post-mortem examination. Daurala police station house officer Suman Kumar Singh said efforts are underway to identify the roadways bus. CCTV footage from cameras installed in nearby areas is being scanned to trace the vehicle and the driver involved in the hit-and-run incident. Police said further investigation is in progress....
