Land broker held in farmer suicide case
Rudrapur/Haldwani, Feb. 9 -- A land broker based in Kashipur was on Friday arrested by the special investigation team (SIT) conducting the probe into the suicide of a farmer in Kathgodam in January, a senior police officer said on Sunday.
The accused was identified as Zahir. He was arrested at Uttar Pradesh's Bareilly railway station as he was trying to flee the town, said the officer.
The officer added that a local court remanded to 14-day judicial custody on Saturday.
Superintendent of police Ajay Ganpati said that Zahir was working as a property dealer for the prime accused, Amarjeet Singh, and had allegedly showed the deceased prospective sites.
The case is regarding the death by suicide of a 39-year-old farmer in a hotel in Kathgodam on January 11.
In a video purportedly recorded before his death, he accused multiple people in Kashipur of cheating him of a sum of Rs.4 crore through a fraudulent land deal.
The video was circulated widely on social media, and spurred the constitution of the SIT on January 15.
Inspector General (Special Task Force) Nilesh Anand Bharne leads the special investigation team. Other members of the special investigation team include Ganpati, Tanakpur circle officer Vandana Verma, inspector Diwan Singh Bisht and sub-inspector Manish Khatri.
Police, meanwhile, produced the accused before a court in Kashipur, from where he was sent to judicial custody on a 14-day remand, they said.
"The police team is actively searching for the remaining accused, and further arrests will be made soon," said Bharne.
The case has also led to departmental action against the concerned police officers.
Former ITI police station in-charge Kundan Singh Rautela, sub-inspector Prakash Best, and Pega outpost in-charge Jitendra Kumar were suspended, while nine police personnel who were posted at the Pega outpost were transferred to other districts and placed on reserve duty
"Whoever is found guilty will face action. Eighteen accused named in the FIR have obtained a stay from the court, so we are currently in a wait-and-watch situation in those cases," an special investigation team officer was quoted as saying on Sunday.
Investigating officials also confirmed that two of the accused- Sukhwant Singh Pannu and Veerpal Singh Pannu had sought anticipatory bail from a Kashipur court, however, their bail applications were rejected....
