Haridwar, Jan. 15 -- Despite dense fog and a cold wave gripping the Garhwal region, large numbers of pilgrims flocked to Haridwar's Ganga ghats on Wednesday for the sacred Makar Sankranti dip. Mela administration officials reported that devotees started arriving at the Brahmakund sanctum sanctorum at Har-ki-Pauri and adjacent ghats from the early hours. Pilgrims streamed in steadily all day despite biting cold. SSP Pramendra Dobhal said authorities had deployed elaborate security and traffic measures for the Makar Sankranti bath, the first major bathing festival of the new year.
