2 killed, 3 hurt as truck climbs onto footpath in north Delhi
New Delhi, April 15 -- Two people died and three were injured after a speeding truck climbed onto a footpath and mowed down people sleeping on it in north Delhi's Kashmere Gate around 2.30am on Monday, police said.
The driver fled but was later arrested. The incident took place near Nigambodh Ghat, they added.
"The truck, loaded with rice, was travelling from Hamidpur village towards Khari Baoli when the driver allegedly dozed off, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and climb onto the footpath," an officer said. Passersby alerted police; PCR vans rushed victims to hospitals.
Officers said, one deceased was identified as Sumit, 41; the other remained unidentified. One injured, Prem, 27, was discharged. Deputy commissioner of police (North) Raja Banthia said a case was registered under sections for causing death by negligence and rash driving. The accused driver, 56, from Aligarh, was arrested, officers added....
