Sarke Chunar row: Fatwa issued in UP against Nora Fatehi
India, March 21 -- The controversy around upcoming film KD: The Devil's song Sarke Chunar Teri Sarke has escalated, with a fatwa being issued against actor-dancer Nora Fatehi. Citing objections over the song's vulgar lyrics and suggestive choreography, religious body Muslim Personal Darul Ifta in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, alleged that it promotes "vulgarity" and disrespects cultural values.
In a statement, the head cleric criticised the portrayal in the track, saying it "hurts religious sentiments and promotes obscenity in the name of entertainment". They further urged authorities to take action against the song and those associated with it. The group also called for stricter regulation of such content, claiming it negatively impacts younger audiences.
Following widespread backlash, the song was banned by the Centre and taken down from all platforms. Nora and the makers of the film had also issued apologies over the content.
Meanwhile, the National Commission for Women (NCW) initiated suo motu cognisance of the matter, issuing summons to both Nora and actor Sanjay Dutt, who features in the song. The body stated that issues concerning women's representation and safety in public discourse must be addressed with sensitivity and accountability.
Earlier, the Central Board of Film Certification had also clarified that it has no role in certifying independent music videos released on digital platforms, distancing itself from the controversy surrounding the song.
