Zirakpur: IT professional receives Rs.1-cr extortion threat via WhatsApp call
Mohali, April 13 -- An IT professional received an extortion call demanding Rs.1 crore froman alleged gangster Shahzad Bhatti who threatened to harm his family and business establishments in Zirakpur.
According to the complainant, the IT company owner, aged 27, told police that he had received a WhatsApp video call from an international number on Friday night.
The caller identified himself as Sahijad Bhatti and demanded Rs.1 crore. The accused allegedly claimed that he had details about the complainant's family, his brother who runs a club, and his close associates. He threatened to blow up the complainant's house, his club and the company if the demand was not met. He also warned that he was not someone who would issue threats without acting on them.
Police said the caller made subsequent follow-up calls to repeat the demand and threats, causing fear to the complainant and his family.
Based on the complaint, police registered a case under section 308(4) (extortion by threat) and section 62 (punishes attempts to commit crimes) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Police said they are tracing the origin of the international number and verifying the caller's identity....
