Tarn Taran, Jan. 30 -- A youth visiting his aunt in Tarn Taran's Bakipur village was allegedly shot dead in a violent attack linked to an old rivalry, police said. The victim, identified as Ranjit Singh Rana, 21, a resident of Sursingh village, along with his brother and two others, had come to pay obeisance at a gurdwara. On their way back, they stopped to meet their aunt in Bakipur village when the assault happened. After leaving her house, they were allegedly surrounded and assaulted by local youths. During the attack, Rana was shot dead. The victim's brother stated that about a year ago, assailants had allegedly harassed their sister. At that time, the family had confronted the accused youths and made them apologise to their sister, he alleged, adding that the present attack was carried out due to the past enmity. Meanwhile, upon receiving information, the police reached the spot and initiated an investigation. Investigating officer Inderjit Singh said that statements are being recorded and the matter has been brought to the notice of senior officials. Further investigation is underway, he added.
