Panchkula, Feb. 3 -- Panchkula police on Sunday arrested two men for allegedly smuggling liquor from Chandigarh, where it was procured at lower rates, and selling it in Himachal Pradesh at higher prices. A large quantity of illegal liquor and a vehicle were recovered from their possession. The accused were identified as Jagdish Chand and Ramesh Kumar, residents of Shimla district in Himachal Pradesh. During the search of the vehicle, police recovered eight cartons of Old Monk rum containing 96 bottles and five cartons of Royal Stag English liquor containing 60 bottles. The accused were apprehended during patrolling and naka checking near Majri Chowk. Acting on a tip-off, the police team raided a spot in Sector 21, where the accused were allegedly waiting in a vehicle with the illegal consignment. Police seized the liquor, the vehicle used in the smuggling and mobile phones of the accused, who failed to produce any valid licence or permit for the possession or transportation of the liquor. An FIR has been registered at the Sector 20 police station under the relevant provisions of the Haryana Excise (Amendment) Act.
