TMC skips signing no-confidence notice
New Delhi, Feb. 11 -- Trinamool Congress, one of the larger Opposition parties, didn't sign the no-confidence notice against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, exposing the rift in the Opposition camp over a key issue.
TMC's Lok Sabha floor leader Abhishek Banerjee later said that his party MPs had "no problem signing the no-confidence motion" but they preferred a calibrated approach and all INDIA partners should have sent a letter to the Speaker highlighting their demands and issues.
"All 28 TMC Lok Sabha MPs would have signed it. However, before moving the no-confidence motion, we want all INDIA bloc partners to sign a letter addressed to the Speaker, highlighting the four points on which the argument is based. For instance, eight INC MPs have been suspended. An appeal can be made to reconsider or revoke the suspension. The Speaker can be given two to three days' time to respond," Banerjee said outside Parliament, minutes before the notice was submitted by three Congress leaders to the Lok Sabha secretary general.
Banerjee added that if the Speaker does not act or fails to provide satisfactory responses to the four issues, a no-confidence motion could be introduced after three days. "If the letter is sent today and no action is taken, the no-confidence motion can be introduced on Friday," he added.
Two TMC leaders indicated that the party's separate stand was also taken in the backdrop of the upcoming West Bengal assembly election. TMC is set to fight alone against the BJP, the Congress and the Left in a four-corner contest. "Why should we follow the strategy of the Congress?" asked a senior TMC MP....
