Kanpur, Nov. 17 -- A sub-inspector of the Uttar Pradesh Police has been arrested in connection with the murder of a 30-year-old woman, whose naked body was found in Mahoba district last week, officers said on Sunday. The family of the deceased, a resident of Kabrai in Mahoba, has accused sub-inspector Ankit Yadav, who was investigating a dowry case filed by the woman, and her estranged husband, CRPF constable Vinod Kumar, of conspiring to kill her. Hamirpur superintendent of police Diksha Sharma confirmed Yadav's arrest after questioning, saying the accused officer has been sent to jail. "His interrogation and electronic evidence was crucial in piecing the case together," Sharma said, adding Yadav, who was posted in Mahoba, has been sent to jail. According to the SP, the woman and the accused sub-inspector had become close during the investigation of her case. "Preliminary inquiry suggests the murder took place after an altercation during an outing, during which Yadav allegedly struck her with an iron rod. The weapon has been recovered," police said. The woman's brother said her marriage to Vinod Kumar on February 22, 2023 soured quickly due to alleged dowry harassment. Her in-laws allegedly demanded a car and Rs.2 lakh. She returned to her parental home and filed a dowry harassment case against her husband and his family, along with a maintenance suit in a Mahoba court. Vinod Kumar was allegedly pressuring her to settle the case. The woman was last seen on November 11 when she attended a hearing in her maintenance case in Mahoba court.
