Student shot dead inside college campus, accused arrested
VARANASI, March 21 -- A 23-year-old Bachelor of Arts (BA) student was shot dead allegedly by a fellow student at Udai Pratap Autonomous College in Varanasi on Friday following an altercation, police said, adding the accused has been arrested.
The incident, which took place around 11am under the Shivpur police station limits, triggered protests on the campus, with students overturning barricades and damaging property, police said.
"Some shops in the vicinity were also shut as tensions flared. Police personnel were deployed to bring the situation under control. A complaint was received that a student was shot dead at the college. The accused, Manjit Chauhan, has been arrested and is being interrogated," said Pramod Kumar, DCP, Varuna Zone.
According to officials, victim Surya Pratap Singh, was inside the Faculty of Arts building when the accused, a student of the same college, approached him.
An argument ensued, during which the accused allegedly fired at the victim before fleeing the spot.
"The student was rushed to a nearby hospital and later referred to the trauma centre at BHU, where he died," said a senior police officer.
Police said preliminary findings suggest that a dispute between the two may have led to the attack....
