Slugfest continues over CBI probe in Pauri murder case
Dehradun, Jan. 30 -- The political slugfest continued in the hill state on Thursday over the CBI inquiry into the Pauri receptionist murder case, with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress trading allegations over the intent, process and the credibility of the probe.
BJP state media in-charge Manveer Singh Chauhan accused the Congress of creating obstacles in the delivery of justice in the case and indulging in "politics of confusion" over the CBI inquiry.
Responding to a statement by Uttarakhand Congress president Ganesh Godiyal, Chauhan said chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami had recommended a CBI probe in the case considering the public sentiment and the wishes of the victim's parents. "The state government's recommendation to the Centre and the subsequent consent of the CBI are part of a legal process. This process does not unfold in the public domain," Chauhan said, accusing the Congress of deliberately misleading people through accusations and counter-allegations.
He claimed that the Congress never intended a CBI inquiry, and that the chief minister's announcement came as a "shock" to the party. "Instead of clarifying the legal process, the Congress has chosen to conduct a media trial and distort facts," he said.
Referring to court proceedings, Chauhan said legal experts and the judiciary closely monitored every aspect of the investigation, including issues such as narco tests and investigative procedures. "The court was satisfied with the SIT investigation and even rejected the demand for a CBI probe at that stage. The accused were convicted and are serving sentences. They have not even secured bail," he said.
Chauhan further alleged that the Congress had recently tried to create confusion over a CBI probe in the recruitment scam case as well, but "suffered a humiliating defeat" as the investigation is already underway. He said the fresh CBI recommendation in the Pauri receptionist murder case was made at the request of the victim's parents to remove any remaining doubts, but the Congress was trying to keep the issue alive for political mileage.
He also referred to other recent controversies, including the Kashipur farmer suicide and an alleged self-staged attack involving a Congress MLA's son, accusing the Congress of spreading "propaganda instead of positive politics". "The public understands the Congress party's anxiousness and will not forgive misleading propaganda. The party is trying to obstruct the process of justice in the Pauri receptionist girl murder case," Chauhan said. The BJP's fresh attack comes after the Opposition Congress accused the BJP-led state government of deliberately trying to divert and weaken the investigation into the Pauri receptionist murder case....
