Simranjit Mann's grandson apologises as wedding ritual sparks row
AMRITSAR, Feb. 3 -- Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) leader Govind Singh Sandhu, who is the grandson of the party president and former MP Simranjit Singh Mann, on Monday appeared before Akal Takht acting jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj to apologise for a ritual practised during his wedding ceremony, that did not go well with the Sikh community.
During his wedding ceremony held recently, he was given respect with a 'chaur' which is a sacred, ceremonial fly whisk used in Sikhism to fan the Guru Granth Sahib as an act of devotion, reverence, and respect.
The Sikh segments objected to this ritual which was also practised by kings in old times, citing that this ritual is only reserved for Guru Granth Sahib.
Sandhu tendered an apology letter to Giani Gargaj at the secretariat.
"I belong to the royal dynasty of Shahzadpur princely state and the ritual has been practised in this state. We continued the same tradition. However, in present times, this ritual is reserved for Guru Granth Sahib. This is my mistake. So, I apologise to Guru Sahib and Guru Panth for this act", he said while interacting with the media....
