New Delhi, Jan. 21 -- The Supreme Court on Tuesday set out to examine if the Enforcement Directorate (ED) is entitled to file writ petitions seeking relief as it admitted separate petitions filed by the Kerala and Tamil Nadu governments challenging a decision of the Kerala high court which held in favour of the investigating agency. A bench of justices Dipankar Datta and Satish Chandra Sharma issued notices on the pleas filed by the two states after senior advocate Kapil Sibal representing Kerala pointed out that the Kerala high court order passed on September 26, 2025 will have a bearing on Tamil Nadu as well which has objected to ED's action of filing a petition in the Madras high court seeking to quash criminal cases lodged against the federal agency by the state. The Kerala high court order was passed in a petition filed by ED questioning the Kerala government's order forming a Commission of Inquiry (CoI) in a gold smuggling case. In an interesting turn to the politically sensitive case, the main accused Swapna Prabha Suresh recorded an audio clip that was released to media where she alleged that ED was coercing her to implicate persons holding high office in the state. Following this, a letter was issued by a co-accused in the same case making a similar allegation. The Pinarayi Vjayan government requested CoI to investigate the audio clip and the letter to bring out the truth....
