Sangrur dera head arrested in abetment to suicide case
SANGRUR, Feb. 25 -- Balwinder Singh, who runs a dera in Changli village of Sangrur, has been arrested on charges of abetment to suicide following the death of a 22-year-old Sikh youth from Katron village, Sangrur.
Dhuri deputy superintendent of police Gurpreet Singh said the incident occurred on February 21, when police learnt that the victim had been thrashed by Balwinder.
He said the victim recorded a video before consuming a poisonous substance, alleging torture by Balwinder forced him to take the extreme step.
Police said that the victim was referred to Rajindra Hospital, Patiala, where he died on February 22. A first information report (FIR) was registered at the Dhuri Sadar police station under sections 108 (abetment of suicide) and 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt) and the provisions of the SC/ST Act were added later during the investigation.
The victim's family on Monday staged a protest at Katron village, refusing to perform the last rites until the accused was arrested. However, they called off the protest the same day after receiving assurances of a fair and timely investigation.
