Ludhiana, April 4 -- Two armed miscreants opened fire at a trader during a robbery attempt at his shop in New Madhopuri on Thursday night, leaving him injured, police said on Friday, adding that the assailants attacked another man with a sharp-edged weapon when he tried to intervene. The incident took place in Street Number 18, where Mohammad Anjar Alam, who runs a money transfer facility under the name Sahil Telecom, was alone at his shop when the masked assailants arrived on a motorcycle. According to police, one of the accused entered the shop armed with a firearm while the other remained outside to keep watch. The assailant allegedly threatened Alam and demanded cash. When he resisted, the accused opened fire, hitting him in the arm. Alam then handed over the cash, which the accused stuffed into a carry bag before fleeing. Despite being injured, he chased the miscreants with a stick and managed to hit them, forcing them to drop the bag containing the cash. As locals gathered and tried to corner the accused, one of the attackers assaulted a nearby shopkeeper, identified as Niku, with a sharp-edged weapon, leaving him seriously injured. Eyewitnesses said the fleeing assailants fired several rounds in the air to create panic before escaping from the spot. The entire incident was captured on CCTV cameras installed inside and outside the shop. Police reached the spot soon after receiving information and shifted the injured to a nearby hospital, where they are undergoing treatment. Sub-inspector Gurmeet Singh, SHO of Daresi police station, said an FIR has been registered against unidentified accused. "Efforts are underway to identify and arrest them. Preliminary investigation suggests that the accused may have conducted a recce of the area before carrying out the crime," he said. Additional deputy commissioner of police (ADCP City-1) Sameer Verma said, "Police have recovered three empty shells and two live cartridges from the spot. The motorcycle used by the accused has also been recovered." Police said the accused have been identified and teams have been constituted to trace and arrest them....
