Punjab cops arrest 181 in 516 raids on Day 27 of campaign
Chandigarh, Feb. 17 -- On the 27th day of Punjab government's "War Against Gangsters", the state police conducted 516 raids at locations linked to associates of gangsters across the state.
The campaign was launched on January 20 across all districts in coordination withthe anti-gangster task force (AGTF).
On Monday, police teams arrested 181 people and recovered two weapons from their possession, taking the total arrests to 9,442 since the campaign's launch.
Apart from this, preventive action was taken against 67 people, whereas 139 people were verified and released after questioning.
Police teams also arrested seven proclaimed offenders during the operation.
Meanwhile, continuing their drive against drugs, police teams arrested 77 drug smugglers on Monday, leading to recovery of 2 kg heroin, 1,345 intoxicant tablets/capsules and Rs.69,120 in drug money.
With this, the number of total drug smugglers arrested under "Yudh Nashian Virudh" has reached 49,841 in 352 days. Police also convinced 16 people to undergo de-addiction and rehabilitation treatment.
The district police on Monday arrested a man after recovering 1.5 kg heroin from him near Barnala bypass.
Bathinda senior superintendent of police (SSP) Jyoti Yadav Bains said the accused was arrested by a team of the Civil Lines police station during patrolling.
Initial probe revealed that Raja was a courier, working for Rakesh Kumar, alias Kaku, a resident of Kheta Singh Basti, Bathinda, who was currently lodged in Ferozepur jail, she said.
The SSP said the jailed accused will be questioned for his role in the crime, and a probe would be conducted into how he was operating the drug trade from behind the bars....
