proclaimed offender who fled trial held
Mohali, Feb. 7 -- Mohali police have arrested a proclaimed offender in a 2020 robbery case involving a Punjab National Bank (PNB) branch in Phase 3A, Mohali.
Police have identified the accused as Sandeep Singh, alias Sunny, a resident of Mehtpur village in Jalandhar district, who was residing in Chandigarh at present.
A team from the proclaimed offender staff, led by station house officer (SHO) Balwinder Singh, arrested Singh under the supervision of Saurav Jindal, superintendent of police (investigation), and Bhupinder Singh, deputy superintendent of police (command centre).
Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Harmandeep Singh Hans said that the accused was arrested on February 3 in connection with a case that was registered at the Mataur police station under Sections 392, 379-B, and 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), along with Sections 25, 54, and 59 of the Arms Act.
According to police, the accused had committed the gunpoint robbery at the PNB branch on June 17, 2020.
He was later declared a proclaimed offender by the court after failing to appear for the trial.
Police further revealed that the accused is wanted in two other cases: FIR No 82 of 2021 at the Phase-1 police station (under Sections 411, 482, 170 of the IPC and the Arms Act) and FIR No 336 of 2021 at the City Kharar police station (under Sections 384 and 120-B of the IPC).
The accused faces approximately 20 criminal cases across Punjab, Chandigarh, and Uttar Pradesh, including charges of murder, assault, robbery, escaping from policecustody, theft, and violations of the Arms Act.
SSP Harmandeep Singh Hans highlighted that the Mohali police have arrested 51 proclaimed offenders since January 1, and the drive to apprehend absconding suspects will continue....
