Kolkata, Jan. 30 -- With at least 27 people remain missing since a devastating fire gutted two warehouses near Kolkata earlier this week, the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday slammed the Mamata Banerjee-led government demanding resignation of the fire department minister even as the Trinamool Congress accused the saffron party of politicising the issue ahead of assembly elections. "We have received 27 missing complaints from families claiming that their kin, who worked in the two warehouses, remain untraceable till Thursday evening," an IPS officer from Baruipur police district said. The toll in the incident, which took place at Nazirabad on the night of January 26, remains unknown even as police said they have recovered 21 body parts - including five on Thursday - from the site. "Around 16 samples are under forensic analysis to ascertain the number of victims and their identities," the IPS officer said. Officials said that blood samples from family members of missing workers have already been collected for DNA matching. Meanwhile, a political slugfest broke out in the poll-bound state over the incident. Suvendu Adhikari, leader of the opposition in the assembly, along with several BJP legislators on visited Nazirabad on Thursday. The administration had already imposed prohibitory orders under section 163 of the BNSS in the area. "The local police and local TMC leaders are responsible as they allow such illegal godowns to operate. Why won't the fire minister step down, taking responsibility for the tragedy? Why shouldn't the state hike the compensation to the victims' families from Rs.10 lakh to Rs.50 lakh?" Adhikari said. The BJP is likely to hold a rally on Friday. TMC's Kunal Ghosh hit back at the BJP. "Three days after the tragedy, BJP leaders have suddenly come to stage a protest and block roads," he added....
