PM's Capital infra push: 2 new Metro links open
New Delhi, March 9 -- Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated two new Metro corridors in the Capital and laid the foundation stone for three new upcoming corridors under Phase V-A of the Delhi Metro expansion, which will add 16.1 kilometres to the Metro network.
The Prime Minister opened a 12.3km section of the Pink Line extension, from Majlis Park to Maujpur-Babarpur, and a 9.9km section of the Magenta Line extension, from Deepali Chowk to Majlis Park. They were opened to the public at 3pm.
"The new Metro section started today will provide major convenience to lakhs of people in the Capital, especially for the people of east and northeast Delhi. Their daily commute will now be much easier than ever before," the Prime Minister said at the inauguration at DDA Grounds in north Delhi's Burari.
In all, combined with the Metro works and opening of Type-5 housing quarters, the Prime Minister inaugurated newly built infrastructure worth a cumulative Rs.33,500 crore.
The opening of the two corridors has taken the Metro network under the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) past the 400-kilometre mark.
Officials said that the DMRC currently operates 303 Metro stations across 416 kilometres in Delhi-NCR.
The three new corridors for which the foundation stone was laid were announced and approved by the cabinet in December 2025: RK Ashram Marg to Indraprastha, Aerocity to Indira Gandhi Airport Terminal-1 and Tughlakabad to Kalindi Kunj. Officials said with the opening of the Majlis Park to Maujpur-Babarpur corridor, the Pink Line is now running in a "full loop" or "ring" shape, similar to the ring road concept.
At present, the Pink Line is the longest line in DMRC's network, spanning a total length of over 71.5 kilometres and 46 stations.
Other features of this corridor also include a bridge over the Yamuna and a 1.4-kilometre double-decker viaduct, which will comprise the Metro track on the upper deck and vehicles on the lower deck. The lower section, for motor vehicles, is yet to be operationalised, as the DMRC had not received permission for felling trees on this stretch. "The permission was later received and work will be completed soon," an official said.
Meanwhile, the Magenta Line corridor from Deepali Chowk till Majlis Park has seven stations, which include three interchange stations at Madhuban Chowk on the Red Line, Haiderpur Badli Mor on the Yellow Line and Majlis Park on the Pink Line. This is only a small section of the Janakpuri West-RK Ashram Marg corridor, which is planned to span 29.3 kilometres in length and comprise 22 stations.
At present, the Magenta operates from the Botanical Garden to the Krishna Park Extension in west Delhi. This additional segment is not connected directly to the Magenta Line, but exists as a separate extension of the Magenta Line in north and northwest Delhi.
Commuters said the new lines will be a boon for northwest and northeast Delhi.
"Now, to go short distances and even to other parts of Delhi, the Metro is an option and this will also reduce road traffic," said Neeti Kumari, 37, a resident of Haiderpur village....
