NHAI official booked for failing to ensure safety measures
Dehradun, April 18 -- Dehradun police registered a first information report (FIR) against an operations manager of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for alleged negligence in ensuring safety measures on the Dehradun-Paonta Sahib national highway, which led to a rise in accidents, officials familiar with the matter said on Friday.
The FIR was registered under sections 125 (a) ( Causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others), and 125 (b) (Causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita(BNS) at Premnagar police station on Thursday on the complaint of sub inspector Satendra Singh.
Naresh Rathore, station house officer (SHO) at Premnagar police station, said, "We have registered the FIR into the matter and our investigation is underway."
According to the FIR, sub-inspector Satendra Singh stated that information received on the matter by constables Mohan Ram and Sanjay Kumar was verified during a subsequent inquiry and found to be correct.
Singhs said, "The probe revealed that on a newly constructed stretch near Kehri village along NH-307, the executing agency failed to install proper signboards, traffic indicators, reflectors, warning signals, lighting arrangements and diversion markings. The lack of these basic safety measures led to confusion among drivers, especially at night due to poor visibility, resulting in a rise in road accidents."
Officials added that several fatalities and injuries have been reported on the stretch, leading to public anger against the agency.
"Despite repeated communication and notices issued to the executing agency to ensure proper safety arrangements and prevent accidents, no concrete action was taken," Singh said.
Saurabh Singh, project director, NHAI, said that accidents occurred on the highway because people flouted traffic rules.
The project manager added that the authority has sought assistance from the police and local transport department for enforcement.
"We will take additional measures to ensure accidents don't occur," he said....
