Jalandhar/Ludhiana, Feb. 2 -- Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday renamed the Adampur airport in Jalandhar as Sri Guru Ravidas Maharaj Ji Airport, fulfilling a long-pending demand raised by various political parties in Punjab over the years. The renaming follows a promise made by PM Modi during a public rally in Hoshiarpur ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. In 2020, the Punjab Vidhan Sabha, under the Congress government led by then chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh, had also passed a resolution seeking the airport's renaming. Spread across 40 acres, the civil terminal uses the airstrip of the Adampur Air Force Station and resumed operations on March 31 last year after a four-year suspension due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Earlier, the airport had provided connectivity to Delhi, Mumbai and Jaipur, but operations on these routes were discontinued due to low passenger demand. Travellers, however, continue to flag concerns over the 4.3-km rural approach road, while officials say road widening has been delayed due to land acquisition issues....
