Japan zoo sees4x surge as fans visit Punch
India, Feb. 25 -- Punch, the baby Japanese macaque who is social media's favourite furry mate, is now emerging as a travel draw. Online attention quickly translated into tourism footfall at the Ichikawa City Zoo, coinciding with the long weekend on the Emperor's Birthday (February 23), authorities wrote on Instagram.
The zoo also recorded over 6,000 visitors in a single day, reported TravelPirates. Zoo authorities had to introduce entry controls and even temporarily close parking areas to manage Punch's fans. Reels shared on Monday captured long queues gathered around Punch's enclosure, with social media users joking about travelling to Japan just to see (and hug) him.
Hand-raised by zoo staff after being abandoned by his mother, Punch went viral for his orangutan plushy, which he treats as a surrogate mum. On Tuesday, reports stated that the plushy was sold out across Japan, US, and Singapore.
In more good news, the zoo shared that Punch is now being groomed by other monkeys in an act of social acceptance. The baby monkey is now also eating with the troop.
