Kolkata, Feb. 4 -- West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday demanded the impeachment of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, as she continued her criticism of the Election Commission of India (ECI) over the ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) in the state. The TMC supremo, while responding to a question from the media on supporting a retrospective law to initiate punitive action against the CEC, said,"We want him to be impeached. We don't have the numbers (in Parliament), but impeachment can take place. There are provisions for impeachment. If such a step is taken, we would discuss it within the party. If something is taking place for public interest, we all work together." Earlier, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had warned the poll panel during the winter session of the Lok Sabha that the opposition would "change the law retroactively" to act against the CEC. Banerjee's remarks came a day after she accused the CEC of "insulting, disrespecting and humiliating" her during a meeting at his New Delhi office. ECI sources said Banerjee has made baseless allegations against the commission, while she misbehaved, thumped the table and stormed out. Banerjee, however, said, "They behaved rudely. Their behaviour was being directed by someone. The ECI is giving a decorated version of what happened inside. We don't expect any respect from the ECI. They are working as BJP cadres," she added. Banerjee also criticised the ECI for deploying state government officers for the SIR. An EC official said, "Out of the five lakh BLOs working in the 12 states, a few have unfortunately died for reasons other than SIR. Often, it has been because of political pressure by TMC agents to give wrong information in the enumeration forms."...
