Rohtak/Chandigarh, Dec. 16 -- A woman police officer and a CISF inspector were among five people killed in multiple fog-related road mishaps in Sonepat, Nuh and Faridabad districts of Haryana, police said on Monday. The mishaps, which involved a number of vehicles, left several people injured. In the most severe accident, at least 18 vehicles were involved in a pile-up on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway in Nuh at 7.30am on Monday, when two people died at the spot. As per the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the chain of accidents started when a passenger bus rammed into a dumper truck in near-zero visibility, followed by a car which crashed into the bus, and subsequent vehicles ploughing into the wreckage within minutes. "Within 15 minutes, nearly 18 vehicles had collided as visibility was barely 10-15 metres," a senior NHAI official said. A 46-year-old CISF inspector Harish Sharma, from Alwar, and 44-year-old Jaipur-based businessman Sheikh Mohammad Khalil died in the crash. More than 30 people were injured, with one reported to be in critical condition. Police said an FIR will be registered against the unidentified truck driver who had stopped first on the highway. Barely two kilometres ahead of the crash site, another pile-up was reported under similar foggy conditions, involving four vehicles. All occupants survived with injuries, police said. In a separate incident in Faridabad, two men were killed when a speeding Ford Endeavour rammed into a container truck parked illegally on the DND-Faridabad flyway around 8am. The deceased were identified as Vishal Kumar, 31, and his driver Sandeep Kumar, 24, both from Jaipur. Vishal's friend Harsh, 25, was critically injured and later shifted to a private hospital. Police said visibility at the time was less than 10 metres. Meanwhile, Gurugram reported three fog-related accidents - on Southern Peripheral Road, Golf Course Extension Road and the KMP Expressway - though no fatalities were recorded. DCP (Traffic) Rajesh Mohan said police had anticipated foggy conditions and deployed teams early. "We studied black spots and placed tyres at diversions and road conversions to slow vehicles and prevent sudden lane-cutting. Additional barricades were also installed at accident-prone stretches," he said. In Sonepat, a woman assistant sub-inspector (ASI) was killed when her car hit a truck due to low visibility near the Gohana toll plaza on the Gohana-Jind green field expressway. The deceased has been identified as Seema, a resident of Murthal in Sonepat. She was posted at Jind court complex. A spokesman of Sonepat police said that the incident occurred when Seema was going from Murthal to attend her duty in Jind. She was rushed to Bhagat Phool Singh medical college for women at Khanpur Kalan where doctors declared her dead. The unknown truck has fled from the spot and he is booked on charges of negligence," the spokesman added....
