Chandigarh, Jan. 12 -- A 63-year-old woman died after being hit by a speeding car while she was standing on the roadside near the Sector 41-D market on Saturday evening. The car driver, later identified as Bhagat Singh, 41, a resident of Sector 41A, was arrested from the spot. As per the police, he was driving under the influence of liquor. The victim was identified as Uma Verma, 63, a resident of Sector 40C. As per information, senior constable Parveen and constable Amit Kumar, who were on patrolling duty in the area, saw the accused's grey Baleno car crash into the victim. When they rushed to help her, she was unconscious. They took her to Government Multi Specialty Hospital, Sector 16, in a PCR vehicle, however, she succumbedto her injuries duringtreatment. Following confirmation of the victim's death, a case under Sections 281 (rash driving) and 106(1) (causing death by negligence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita was registered at Sector 39 police station....
