Building collapse kills 3 labourers in Barnala
Barnala, March 30 -- Three labourers were killed after a building under repair collapsed in Barnala's Pharwahi village early Sunday morning.
As per information, the property, owned by one Vishal, had recently suffered structural damage due to seepage of sewage into the foundations. Contractor Ranjit Singh of Moga had been carrying out repair work for over two weeks, for which he had roped in five to six labourers.
Around 4.15 am, when the workers were fast asleep, the structure reportedly caved-in, trapping them inside.
The victims, identified as Varinder Singh alias Bobby, 35, Prince, and Rajnish Singh, both in their 20s, were subsequently pulled out of the debris and rushed to a hospital, but were declared brought dead. All three hailed from Moga, police said.
A fourth worker, who was also present at the site, survived and was later discharged from Barnala civil hospital.
Barnala deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Satvir Singh said a case has been registered against the contractor under Section 106(1) (causing death by negligence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Meanwhile, the labour department has initiated the process to secure compensation for the victim's families, from the contractor, and departmental action, including issuance of challans, is underway....
