Chandigarh, April 3 -- The maximum temperature crossed 35degC for the first time this season on Thursday, but relief is around the corner as hail and thunderstorms are likely in the city on Friday and Saturday, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). As per IMD, two Western Disturbances (WDs) are likely to hit the region in quick succession. The system will be strongest on Friday and Saturday, and light to moderate rain is likely, even as there are chances of hail and squall in the city. The second system is likely to affect the city from April 7. IMD has issued an orange alert for thunderstorms and hail in the city on both days. Orange is the second highest of the four colour warning system used by IMD, asking people to remain prepared. IMD has advised residents against going outside or taking shelter under trees during thunderstorms. IMD Chandigarh director Surender Paul added that due to the system, snow was also likely in the higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh and Kashmir, which would have a cooling effect on the region. Meanwhile, amid clear skies on Thursday, the maximum temperature jumped from 32.8degC on Wednesday to 35.7degC, 3.1 degrees above normal and highest so far this season. The minimum temperature also rose from 15.8degC on Wednesday to 17.6degC on Thursday, still 1.3 degrees below normal. As per the Long Range Forecast issued by IMD, above average rain is likely in the city this month. The forecast, which is prepared by using probability models, says there is over a 50% chance for above normal rain in the city in April. Normally, 13.5 mm rain is recorded in April.
