GUWAHATI, April 2 -- Senior Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday accused the BJP-led Assam government of curbing freedom of expression by forcing women beneficiaries to attend party events, including rallies by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, under threat of losing scheme benefits. Addressing her first election meeting at Nazira in Assam on Wednesday, she said the fight in the upcoming assembly election is to ensure an Assam where culture and freedom of expression prevail. "The Assam government is doling out several schemes, including cash transfers to accounts of women. But they are made to attend BJP's events, including PM Modi's rallies or the CM's programmes, and told that the benefits would end if they fail to do so," she said. Gandhi Vadra accused the BJP of also intimidating Congress workers to attend two PM Modi's events in Assam. "The people want a clean and corruption-free government, but only one family is looting everything and large tracts of land and resources are being handed over to big industrial houses. The Congress leader recalled cultural icon Zubeen Garg, saying her party wants to turn the state into one he dreamt of - strong, developed and where everyone can live with self-respect. "Modi says that they have a double-engine government, but its one of 'double-ghulami' (double-slavery) and this government wants to turn the self-respecting people of Assam into slaves. It is time for you to raise your heads and bring Congress to power," said Gandhi Vadra. "For several years, the BJP has been promising to grant scheduled tribe status to six communities of Assam, but despite being in power for two terms, they haven't done that because they don't intend to do it," she said, while addressing her second election meeting in Tingkhong. In the third meeting at Khowang, she accused the BJP of amassing immense wealth while the common public suffered due to inflation and lack of jobs....
