BJP balances caste equation in Bihar cabinet
NEW DELHI, May 8 -- The Bharatiya Janata Party has given representation to Scheduled Castes, Other Backward Classes (OBC), Extremely Backward Classes (EBCs) and Upper Castes in Bihar's state cabinet.
On Thursday, 15 BJP leaders were sworn in as ministers in the chief minister Samrat Chaudhary cabinet. According to party leaders, the BJP stuck to its social engineering formula to ensure its hold over the diverse caste groups remains intact.
"This is the first time that the BJP has a chief minister in the state and it is imperative for the party to walk the talk on sabka saath, sabka vikas (development for all)...Unlike the RJD and Congress that have focussed only on the minorities and a particular caste group, the BJP has strong coalition of different castes and communities," said a senior leader in Delhi. Of the 15 who were sworn in, 10 are EBCs; 6 are OBCs; 7 SCs and 9 are from the so-called upper-castes. The presence of nine Upper Caste leaders is also expected to mollify the caste group in UP, the leader said....
