At 6.59%, Punjab's forest cover lowest in country, claims Seechewal
Jalandhar, April 6 -- Union minister for environment, forest and climate change Kirti Vardhan Singh informed the upper house that Punjab has just 6.59% area currently under forest cover in a reply to a query raised by Rajya Sabha member Balbir Singh Seechewal.
Raising concerns, Seechewal, citing the Centre's data, claimed that Punjab's forest cover is the lowest among all states.
"In terms of maintaining forest area, Punjab has fallen behind even Bihar, while neighbouring Haryana has also surpassed it. The forest cover in Haryana is 7.48%, Rajasthan has 8%, Uttar Pradesh has 9.96%, and Bihar has 10.52%," he said.
"These are not just statistics, but a warning for the future for an agriculture-based state like Punjab," he said....
