Chandigarh, Jan. 16 -- The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Thursday appointed 2007-batch IAS officer Anindita Mitra as the new chief electoral officer of Punjab. The ECI issued a notification regarding her appointment in exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (1) of section 13A of the Representation of the People Act, 1950. Mitra is currently serving as secretary, school education and higher education, in the state government. She replaces Sibin C, who is proceeding on central deputation and has been appointed as joint secretary in the Union ministry of health and family welfare. The poll panel selected Mitra from a panel of three IAS officers sent by the Punjab government for the post in July 2025.
