65-yr-old held for raping, killing minor; stir erupts
Pune, May 3 -- A 65-year-old man with criminal record has been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting and killing a three-and-a-half-year-old girl in Bhor tehsil of Maharashtra's Pune district, police said on Saturday.
The incident led to major protests in the area. Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis called the incident "extremely shameful" and said the government will seek capital punishment for the accused. He added that the case will be taken up in a fast-track court.
The victim had come to visit her grandmother for the summer vacation, said police. The accused, who works as a labourer, allegedly lured the girl under the pretext of showing her a calf on Friday and took her to a cattle enclosure where he sexually assaulted her and later killed her by hitting her with a stone, a police officer said.
"He was arrested within one-and-a-half hours of the crime on Friday on the basis of CCTV footage from a private residence which captured him with the child. A case was registered against him on charges of kidnapping, rape, murder, outraging woman's modesty and other relevant provisions of the BNS and sections 4,6,8, 12 of the Pocso Act based on the complaint by the girl's family," said Pune (rural) SP Sandip Singh Gill....
