6 untraceable after passenger boat capsizes in Assam river
Silchar, Jan. 28 -- At least six people went missing after the boat they were travelling on capsized in the Brahmaputra river in Assam's Barpeta district on Tuesday afternoon, officials familiar with the matter said.
According to officials of the district disaster management authority (DDMA), Barpeta, preliminary information suggests that the motorised country boat was ferrying passengers from Rahampur to Borghul when it overturned midstream.
Around 25 people were onboard at the time of the accident, officials said.
While nearly 18-19 passengers managed to swim to safety and were rescued with the help of local fishermen, at least six people,including four children and a woman, remained unaccounted for till the filing of this report.
A team from the state disaster response force (SDRF), along with local fishermen, launched a search and rescue operation soon after the incident. However, no confirmed update on the missing passengers had emerged till late Tuesday evening. Locals alleged that the boat was being operated in a reckless manner and that passengers were not provided with life jackets. Strong river currents are also suspected to have contributed to the accident, raising concerns over compliance with basic safety norms.
DDMA officials said the search operation was suspended after sunset on Tuesday and would resume on Wednesday morning, continuing until all the missing passengers are traced....
