Kolkata, Feb. 22 -- At least 294 serving and retired district judicial officers are likely to be deployed in West Bengal to adjudicate around 4.5 million pending disputed voter claims during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the poll-bound state, officials aware of the details said on Saturday. The Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court Sujoy Paul held a meeting in this regard with senior officials of the state government and the Election Commission of India on Saturday. "There are around 4.5 million pending cases needing adjudication by serving and retired district judges and additional district judges. We have proposed that at least 294 such judicial officers could be appointed - one for each of the 294 assembly constituencies - to dispose of the cases at the earliest," said a senior official of the poll panel. The judicial officers are expected to start the work on Monday. The development comes a day after the Supreme Court requested the chief justice of the high court to spare serving as well as retired judicial officers in the rank of additional district judge and district judge to revisit and dispose of claims falling under the "logical discrepancy" category. The SIR was rolled out in West Bengal on November 4, 2025. While the draft electoral roll was published on December 16, 2025 with around 5.8 million voters' names struck off, another 15.2 million voters - whose names could not be mapped with the 2002 electoral roll and those with forms having logical discrepancies -- were called for hearings which started from December 17. The hearing process was concluded on February 14. The scrutiny and disposal of cases continued till February 21. The final voter roll for the state is slated to be published on February 28. Assembly elections are set to follow weeks later. Following Saturday's meeting, the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court ordered the cancellation of leave for all judicial officers posted in different courts of West Bengal till March 9, to ensure compliance with directions passed by the Supreme Court for the completion of SIR. A notification issued by the high court's registrar general said all leaves, except for medical emergencies, granted earlier to any judicial officer, stand cancelled till March 9. At least 480 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) would be initially deployed in West Bengal to pave the ground for the coming assembly polls, the Centre has informed the state government in a letter. The first batch of 240 companies is expected to arrive on March 1, even before the poll dates are announced by the Election Commission of India. The second batch would arrive on March 10. "It has been decided to initially deploy 480 companies of CAPF for area domination, confidence building measures, poll day related duties, guarding of EVMs and strong room centres and counting centre arrangements during the election process in West Bengal," said letter issued on Friday, a copy of which HT has seen. The final electoral roll after SIR is scheduled to be published on February 28, and the EC is expected to announce the election dates anytime in March. "The poll dates have not yet been announced. Law-and-order remains with the state government before the elections are announced. What do the zamindars of Delhi think? What are they afraid of so much? It is because they know very well that the people of Bengal will reject them," TMC leader Kunal Ghosh said....
