19 held for violence during protests in Mathura
Agra, March 23 -- Nineteen people have been arrested and sent to jail for allegedly blocking the Delhi-Agra National Highway and indulging in violence following the death of cow vigilante Chandrashekhar alias Farsa Baba (55) in a road accident, police said on Sunday.
The arrests come a day after the 57-year-old was killed in the accident in dense fog while inspecting a container on the highway in the early hours of Saturday, when a speeding truck rammed into the stationary container, leaving him critically injured. He later succumbed to his injuries.
Senior superintendent of police of Mathura, Shlok Kumar, said, "The accused have been booked for attempt to murder, unlawful assembly, obstructing public servant among others under relevant sections of BNS, along with provisions of the Criminal Law Amendment Act, the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act and the Information Technology Act."
Among those arrested are close aides of the deceased and one Daksh Chaudhary, who claimed to be an activist, reached Mathura from Ghaziabad and attempted to ignite the situation by spreading rumours on social media, said police.
They added that, following demands by the followers of the deceased, the last rites were conducted on Saturday in the presence of officials without a post-mortem examination....
