India, March 4 -- Composer-singer Salim Merchant turned 50 yesterday. He hosted a party in Mumbai to ring in his landmark birthday on Saturday night, and had several celebs from the music fraternity in attendance. Interestingly, many musicians took the stage for impromptu acts. While ghazal legend Talat Aziz sang his iconic song Zindagi Jab Bhi Teri Bazm Mein (Umrao Jaan; 1981) as the clock struck 12, the cake-cutting ceremony was followed by performances by Sonu Nigam, Benny Dayal, Sheykhar Ravjiani, Raj Pandit, Shruti Pathak, Afsana Khan and Jazim Sharma, among others. The instruments were taken care of by percussionists Karsh Kale, Ranjit Barot and Darshan Doshi, while Sheldon D'Silva and Rhythm Shaw took charge of the strings.
