Mumbai's musical road hits a sour note with residents
India, Feb. 23 -- I
ndia's first musical road, inaugurated in Mumbai on February 11 and designed to play Jai Ho from the 2008 film Slumdog Millionaire, is already facing backlash. Residents in the nearby Breach Candy area say the installation has added to the neighbourhood's noise levels, leaving many fatigued and frustrated.
Recently, members of the Breach Candy management and the Breach Candy Residents Forum - located close to the stretch - had written to Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani and the CM Devendra Fadnavis's office, flagging concerns about the project.
Core member Nandini Chabria tells us, "It's just noise, there is no music; it is a bad, muffled Jai Ho. It constantly echoes through the residential zone. We are unable to sleep at night. Senior citizens are not able to rest well. There are hospitals nearby and school going children." She adds, "Already Mumbai has a high level of noise pollution on the main road and now an additional noise has been added. The term melody is not the right word as there is no melody if it causes you fatigue. There was no notice of this project happening as well as no senior citizen consultation."
Echoing similar concerns, local resident Neha Trivedi says, "There is also a promenade right opposite the musical road, where people often go for morning and evening walks. It sounds like construction. It's a fast lane so nobody would actually go according to a speed limit, as some vehicles run at different speeds so the music doesn't even play well. Plus, it's annoying because it is muffled. It doesn't even sound like Jai Ho."
Another resident, Sonali Vanjara, adds, "It is very disturbing and horrid. It shouldn't be the way to contain speed. Not pleasant to hear, it's a nuisance. How is this discouraging people from speeding?"
However, resident Suresh Chowsky points out a broader issue: "I get the disturbance from the musical road but what about the instant noise pollution from the main road? The constant honking and all.there is no complaint regarding that?"
When contacted, an official from Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said, "BMC is examining this issue."...
