India, Feb. 12 -- M otorists in Mumbai travelling along a stretch of the Mumbai Coastal Road will soon be greeted by the Oscar-winning track Jai Ho (Slumdog Millionaire, 2008) by AR Rahman. Inaugurated by CM Devendra Fadnavis yesterday, the project marks India's first 'musical road'. The specially engineered strips have been installed on the north-bound carriageway between Nariman Point and Worli. Designed to produce the tune when vehicles pass over them at speeds of 70-80 kmph, the installation becomes audible as motorists exit the underground tunnel. To prepare commuters, the civic body has placed signboards 500 metres, 100 metres and 60 metres ahead of the stretch, alerting them while they are still inside the tunnel. The engineering concept , which traces its origins to Japan in 2007 when engineer Shizuo Shinoda discovered it, involves cutting grooves or strips into the road surface at precise intervals. As vehicles drive over them at specific speeds, the friction between tyres and grooves produces sound waves that resemble a melody. This is the first such project in India. According to the senior civic official, "The tune Jai Ho has been chosen as a dedication to the nation and also as it infuses a feeling of patriotism in people." The project was commissioned by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) at a cost of Rs.6.21 crore, plus GST, awarded to a Hungarian company. HTC...
